Grant Information

Waverly Little League Historic Gallery

The Waverly Free Library, in cooperation with the Waverly Little League, is pleased to announce it is the recipient of a grant from the Community Foundation for South Central New York-Broome Library Foundation Fund. The project will include a historic exhibition showcase consisting of several canvas art pieces, bound albums of original photos, collage photo books, and digital files made available for virtual viewing. The historic exhibition will also include a travelling gallery, to be showcased at the Waverly Library, Waverly Historic Society, Waverly Village Hall, Waverly Little League, and Muldoon Gardens. The collection includes over 300 photos from the late 1940s through the 1950s, documenting the building of the fields, press box, and bleachers; along with photos of early parades, games, players and league leaders. Bakley Photo & Design will collaborate on the project.

The Waverly Little League was first chartered with Little League International in 1951. While this exhibition aims to protect and preserve local history, it also serves to celebrate generations of community involvement in the organization. Troy Campbell, Waverly Little League President, indicates that the project is both a memorial to the legacy of all those that brought Little League baseball to the valley, and a small token of appreciation to the countless volunteers, coaches, parents and community, that keep this tradition alive for the kids. Waverly Free Library Director Cynthia Durbin was instrumental in securing the grant funding for the project and stated, “This is a wonderful opportunity to not only help preserve an important part of Waverly’s history, but to bring people in to the library and get reacquainted with the many new and exciting things that will be happening throughout the summer, as well as making the library a gathering place for people to reminisce about bygone days and assist in identifying those in the photos”. The Little League Historic Exhibition will showcase the first gallery viewing at the Waverly Free Library the week of June 8t, 2015. Gallery dates for other locations will be posted at the Waverly Library and on the Waverly Little League Facebook page, (www.facebook.com/waverlylittleleague).
